Meet Your Advisor - Helen Wilson

How many years have you worked in the UAC? How many years have you worked at WSU?
10 years for both

What is your Educational Background?
BA in History,The College of Wooster (Wooster, Ohio)
MSW in Social Work, The University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI)
EdS in Instructional Technology, Wayne State University

Do you work with any specialized student populations?
I coordinate the REACH Program (for students on probation after their first term at WSU) which involves presenting a workshop and advising students to improve academically.

I advise students in the Comerica Scholars Program and students receiving the Wade McCree Scholarship.

I also advise many students registered with SDS (Student Disability Services).

What are you currently reading/watching?
I am currently reading "Glass Lake" by Maeve Binchy. I am also reading "Stepping Up, a
journey through the Psalms of Ascent" by Beth Moore for a bible study at my church. I enjoy watching TV shows like "Grey's Anatonmy", "Castle" and "Law and Order". I also enjoy watching various kinds of movies ( romantic comedy, action, or drama).

Do you have a philosophy for Advising?
Students are responsible for their academic success. Advisors are there to provide guidance, support and encouragement to students. They must listen well to students, show a caring attitude and display empathy. Advisors need to connect students to resources when needed and help them to navigate their path toward acdemic success. Advising helps show students how to take responsibility for their choices while continuing to move toward their individual academic goals.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you HAVE to have?
Water, Bible and Tennis Racquet
